What are "WYSIWYG" programs?
WYSIWYG is an abbreviation for What You See Is What You Get.
It is a term given in computing to identify programs where their content is displayed (during editing) the same as the final product. Popular HTML "WYSIWYG" programs (or editors) are Microsoft Frontpage and Adobe Dreamweaver.
Advantages
- Easy to use
- Creates websites quickly
- No programming knowledge required
- Good learning beginner's tool
Disadvantages
- Adds unnessary code to source files, increasing file size
- Bigger files load slower
- Important attribute tags are not used, like the image ALT
- Search engines take longer to 'crawl' through, making it harder to index
